ACTIVITY 1 SAMPLE PAGE
RITTI ACTIVITY 1
EXAMPLE
Should a wind farm be built off Block Island?

*Students need to be involved in real (authentic) problems connected to their learning focus.
*How can I get my students (and myself) to be social scientists, scientists, readers, writers, mathameticians, etc.

NOTE: This is where we can connect the work of the Dana Center and the vision of RITTI.
Look at the GSE'S and GLE'S across content areas and try to decide how you could engage students in an authentic activity (as a scientist...) at a specific grade level.

Pick a GLE/GSE in a content area and and think about what that standard looks like in action.

Grade level
EXAMPLE
Grade 6
GLEs/GSEs Before
R-5-15.3
Research by reading multiple sources (including print and non-print texts) to report information, solve a problem, or to formulate a judgment gathering organizing and interpreting the information.

GLEs/GSEs Addressed
R-6-15.3
Research by reading multiple sources (including print and non-print texts) to report information, solve a problem or to make a decision, formulate a judgment by gathering organizing and interpreting the information.

GLEs/GSEs After
R-7-15.3
Research by reading multiple sources (including print and non-print texts) to report information, solve a problem or to make a decision, formulate a judgment, or to support a thesis by gathering organizing, analyzing and interpreting the information

Content Area Focus
Informational Literacy (focus: environment and research strategy)
How students will demonstrate they are (scientists, social scientists, writers, readers and/or mathematicians)...
*Should a wind farm be constructed off Block Island?
*Students will gather information on wind farms by reading and listening to print and non-print media.
*Students will select from the pool of sources which information best supports each side’s argument.
*Students will summarize, write in your own words, visual representation (graphic organizer, poster)
